A Study on the Release of Eugenol Component from Zinc Oxide Eugenol Canal Sealers

Abstract
Because eugenols released from ZOE sealers could be irritant to the periapical tissue, the release pattern of eugenol component from ZOE sealers could have the clinical importances. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the eugenol compnent
release
patterns from zinc oxide eugenol based sealers. Specimens made from three kinds of commercial ZOE sealers which have different additives such as microcrystals, rosins or resins were immersed in saline during 1, 7, 14, and 21 days perspectively.
Quantitative and qualitative analysis of eugenol components solved into saline from ZOE sealer specimens were done using Gas chromatographs. All of ZOE sealers showed the release of eugenol in to saline, and micro-crystal reinforced type ZOE
sealer
(PD)
showed the higher mean values of eugenol release than the others (CN, TS). Almost of the eugenol release were occured during the first 7 days, and after that the release of eugenol were diminished. Although rosinadded (CN) and micro-crystal added
(PD)
sealers showed the gradual decreasing pattern of eugenol release with increased immersion times, but resin added sealer (TS) showed the severe release pattern of eugenol at first day and after that the unchanged pattern of it during experimental
periods
immersions was exhibited.
